PURPOSE: To provide a relatively simple process for converting nonuniform-size copolymer beads into an ion exchange resin showing a relatively narrow particle size distribution.
CONSTITUTION: There is provided a process for producing an improved ion exchange resin derived from many nonuniform particle size crosslinked copolymer beads which comprises contacting the copolymer beads with a functiomalizing agent in a manner such that the ion exchange groups are substituted onto the beads and continuing this contact until a partially functionalized ion exchange resin having a particle size distribution characterized by a standard deviation made smaller than that of a particle size distribution obtained by substantially fully functionalizing the beads with the ion exchange groups is obtained.
