PURPOSE: To reduce an amount of generation of undesirable gaseous hydrocarbon and to lower an activation level of a catalyst during initial reforming operation step by contacting the catalyst with a unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon at a specific temperature in pre-treating the reforming catalyst comprising at least one kind of VIII group noble metals and a support.
CONSTITUTION: When a reforming catalyst (an example, a catalyst comprising platinum) comprising at least one kind of VIII group noble metals and a support is pre-treated, the catalyst is contacted with an unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon (for instance, olefin) at 200-500°C. Consequently an activation level of the catalyst during initial reforming operation step is lowered, and an amount of resultant undesirable gaseous hydrocarbon and a danger of temperature uncontrollability inside a reactor are reduced. This forming of passive state is done without using a unpleasant noxious sulfur compound and is applicable to a zeolite supported catalyst without deactivating of the catalyst excessively.
