PURPOSE: To prevent a guide shoe from producing flaws by previously coating a lubricant on the surface of a rolling material to be supplied to a rolling mill provided with guide shoes.

CONSTITUTION: In manufacturing (hot pipe rolling) a pipe by a skew rolling system; a rolling material A is manufactured into a pipe by guiding it by a plug 3 attached to the front end of a mandrel bar 2 arranged between rolls 1, 1, while rotating it by the skew rolling rolls 1, 1. Guide shoes 4 are disposed at both upper and lower positions between the rolls 1, 1 to guide the material A in piercing for the purpose of preventing a rolled pipe-stock from bulging more than needed. Here, a lubricant is coated on the outer surface of material A before or after heating the material A expected to be supplied to a piercer. This method is applicable to all the mills provided with guide shoes. Further, a lubricant having resistance to fire, a property capable of well stripping off seized matters B, and a sufficient adhesive force to the material A is selected.
