To provide a method for preventing the oxidation of molten magnesium alloy and a magnesium alloy product.
The surface of the molten magnesium alloy is coated with a film composed of the oxide of an alkaline earth metals. Since the alkaline earth metals have higher affinity for oxygen in comparison with the magnesium, on the molten magnesium alloy surface in contact with the oxygen, the oxidized film is generated by oxidizing with the priority to the magnesium. Since the alkaline earth metal oxidized film once generated has closeness and toughness, is not broken in such a degree as the variation of the molten metal surface during operating a die casting, and the molten metal surface is stably covered and shut off from the outer surrounding atmosphere, and the oxidation of the molten metal is prevented. The oxidized film covering the surface of the molten magnesium alloy can be formed by oxidizing the alkaline earth metals containing the molten magnesium alloy, or can be formed by oxidizing the alkaline earth metals supplied onto the surface of the molten magnesium alloy.
