Title:
METHOD OF PROCESSING RADIOACTIVE WASTE
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPS5999399
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:
Liquid waste having a high level of radioactivity is converted to a liquid of low level activity and a stable solid suitable for long term storage by passing the waste through an ion exchange medium, eg a titanate; a zeolite, or calcium hydroxy apatite, to retain the highly radioactive materials thereon and produce said low-level liquid waste suitable for direct disposal, and then the contaminated exchange material is heated with additional glass forming materials where necessary to form a melt comprising a calcium titanium silicate glass containing substituted ions, which melt is cooled to a glass which is then reheated to a temperature in the range 950 DEG C to 1050 DEG C to cause crystallisation of the glass when a product comprising sphere crystals in a glassy matrix is obtained. Most of the radioactive part of the composition is found in the crystalline portion. The composition of the glass used is given in detail in the specification and claims.
