To develop a reprocessing method which achieves the selective sulfurization of only nuclear fission products at a low temperature and also attains the separation/recovery of nuclear fuel materials in a highly nuclear non-proliferative condition.
In a method for reprocessing spent nuclear fuel, compounds of nuclear fission products in it are selectively sulfurized by a mechanochemical treatment and the washing of the compounds with a dilute acid dissolves sulfide to recover fuel materials. The sulfide is dissolved and the fuel materials are separated/recovered as solid oxide by mixing the powder obtained after the oxidization of the spent nuclear fuel materials with a sulfurizing agent and using the mechanochemical treatment to reduce the fuel materials, selectively sulfurize the nuclear fission products and wash them with the dilute acid.
