To provide a method for producing 2-adamantanol by reducing 2- adamantanone in high yield using an inexpensive and easy to handle compound as a reducer.
The 2-adamantanol is produced by reducing the 2-adamantanone with trichlorosilane by such a method as bringing the 2-adamantanone into contact with a mixture of an activator and trichlorosilane. The activator comprises at least one compound selected from the group consisting of, for instance, N,N-dimethylformamide; a formyl compound of a cyclic amine such as 1-formylpyrrolidine, 1-formyl-2-hydroxymethylpyrrolidine; and a formamide compound having an oxo group attached to a carbon atom at the β position of a nitrogen atom such as N-hexyt-1-formylprolineamide, N-diphenylmethyl-1- formylprolineamide, 1-formylpralinebenzyl ester or the like.
