Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for industrially advantageously producing a tetraalkylbiphenol (TABP), capable of repeatedly recovering and reusing an unreacted dialkylphenol (DAP).
SOLUTION: This method comprises a process (A) for conducting oxidative dimerization reaction of the DAP with an oxygen-containing gas in the presence of a water solvent and a metal catalyst to obtain aqueous slurry composed so that the TABP is dispersed in a reaction liquid containing the unreacted DAP, the metal catalyst, and aromatic aldehydes as an impurities and a process (B) for separating the TABP from the obtained aqueous slurry through solid-liquid separation, wherein the aqueous slurry and/or the aqueous reaction liquid recovered in the process (B) are distilled to recover an azeotropic mixture comprising water and the unreacted DAP, a part of the recovered fraction containing the aromatic aldehydes is supplied to the oxidative dimerization reaction, and an amount of the aromatic aldehydes contained in the charged reaction liquid is controlled to be 60 or less times by mol the amount of the metal catalyst therein.
