To provide a method for producing an alicyclic diol, without requiring isolation of an intermediate product.
This method for producing the alicyclic diol expressed by formula (IV) (n is 0 or 1) comprises (1) subjecting a compound expressed by general formula: R1OOCCH=CHCOOR2 (R1 and R2 are each a 1-10C alkyl) or the like and cyclopentadiene or dicyclopentadiene to Diels-Alder reaction in a solvent or without using the solvent, so as to form a compound which is expressed by formula (III) (n is 0 or 1) and corresponds to such a compound that an upper CH2OH group in formula (IV) is changed into COOR1 and a lower CH2OH group therein is changed into COOR2, (2) adjusting an acid value of the obtained reaction mixture liquid to be not more than 8 KOHmg based on 1 g of the formed compound (III) or not adjusting the acid value when the acid value of the reaction mixture liquid is in a range specified in the above, and (3) reacting the compound (III) with hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst, without isolating the compound (III) from the reaction mixture liquid.
