To provide a method for producing an amide or a lactam by which the amide or the lactam can be formed in high conversion and high yield without forming a large amount of byproducts such as ammonium sulfate in the method for producing the amide or the lactam by a Beckmann rearrangement reaction of an oxime compound.
The method for producing the amide or lactam includes rearranging the oxime compound in the presence of a compound represented by general formula (1) (wherein, R1, R2 and R3 are each independently hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, alkyl substituted with halogen, aryl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl, hydroxy, aryloxy, alkoxy substituted with halogen, mercapto, carboxy, substituted oxycarbonyl, acyl, acyloxy, nitro, sulfone, cyano, amino or oxyamino; and L is a leaving group) by using a nitrile compound or a mixture of the nitrile compound and an aliphatic hydrocarbon as a solvent to produce the corresponding amide or lactam.
