To provide an economically excellent method for producing anthraquinonecarboxylic acids.

A chlorinated anthraquinone and carbon monoxide are allowed to react with each other in the presence of a palladium catalyst, a ligand, water and a base to produce a corresponding anthraquinonecarboxylic acid represented by formula (I) (wherein R may be identical or different, and are each H, a 1-6C alkyl, a 1-6C haloalkyl, a 1-6C alkoxy or a 1-6C haloalkoxy; (n) is an integer of from 1 to 8).
