Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce arylhydroquinones and arylquinones in mild conditions without using a rare metal catalyst.SOLUTION: A method for producing arylhydroquinones by Michael addition of a an aryl compound with quinones in the presence of a catalyst. As the catalyst, the combination of a Lewis acid and a Bronsted acid is used. As the Lewis acid, M(BAr)(M is an alkali metal, an alkali earth metal or a triarylmethyl; four Ar's are aryl having an electron-withdrawing group and four Ar's may be the same or different; and n is the same number as the valence of M) is used. For example, an aimed product is produced by Michael addition of 1,3-dimethoxybenzene with 1,2-benzoquinone in the presence of a catalytic amount of Li[B(CF)] and an oxalic acid.
