Abstract:
To provide a method for producing a high purity α,α- bis(hydroxymethyl)alkanic acid of less metal content in high yield.
This method for producing an α,α-bis(hydroxymethyl) carboxylic acid represented by formula (I) (wherein, R is an alkyl, a cycloalkyl or an aryl) is characterized by comprising a step where a mixture containing the α,α-bis(hydroxymethyl)carboxylic acid is subjected to crystallization in the presence of 1-2 wt.% water in an acetic ester. The bis(hydroxymethyl)carboxylic acid obtained by the production method of the present invention is useful for a raw material of polyurethane, polyester, alkyd resin, or the like.
