To produce carbonic acid diester with a sufficient yield and selectivity by an electrolytic reaction which has not been produced with a sufficient yield and selectivity in a conventional electrolytic reaction.
In the method for producing the carbonic acid diester, an alkoxy compound and a carbon monoxide are subjected to an electrolytic reaction by using a carbon electrode containing a platinum group element supporting a catalyst obtained by supporting the platinum group element on a carrier comprising conductive carbon having a primary particle diameter of 100 nm or smaller. Since the conductive carbon is an ultrafine particle having such a primary particle diameter of 100 nm or smaller, a volume resistivity value of the carrier is reduced, and catalyst-electrode performance is improved by the improvement of electrical conducting property.
