Abstract:

To provide a method for selectively producing carboxymethylcellulose with extremely high reaction efficiency of monohaloacetic acid or its salt.

This method for producing carboxymethylcellulose comprises reacting powdery cellulose of low crystallinity with monohaloacetic acid or its salt in the presence of a base and in the absence of an organic solvent.
