To provide a method for producing a composite material, with which cost is reduced, and to provide the composite material.
The method for producing a composite material 10 includes the following steps. The method includes steps of: preparing a metal base material 11 including a surface having an opening part; feeding powder including thermally conductive particles having thermal conductivity of ≥200 W/mK and metal powder including a metal material different from the material constituting the metal base material 11 to the opening part of the surface 11a of the metal base material 11; and subjecting the powder, the metal powder and the metal base material 11 to friction stirring so as to form a composite material part 12. The composite material 10 is provided with: a metal base material 11 having a surface 11a; and a composite material part 12 arranged on the surface 11a of the metal base material 11. The composite material member 12 is made of an alloy including thermally conductive particles having thermal conductivity of ≥200 W/mK and including a metal material constituting the metal base material 11, and the thermally conductive particles have volume content of 10 to 70 vol.% in the composite material part.
