Abstract:
Diphenyl compounds (I) are new. Diphenyl compounds of formula (I) are new. Y 1> : diphenyl group of formula (XIV), 9,10-dihydro-phenanthrene compound of formulae (XV) and (XVI) or 9H-fluorene compound of formula (XVII); either m, n : 0 or 1; and m+n : 1 or 2; X : bond, -CH 2-CH 2-, -CH=CH-, C=C- or benzene compound of formula (a); L : R, F, Cl, Br, I, OH, OR, SH, SR, CN, NO 2, NO, CHO, COOH, COOR, CONH 2, CONHR, CONR 2, CF 3, NH 2, NHR or NR 2, in which one; R : optionally substituted 1-12C alkyl, 1-12C alkenyl, 1-12C acyl or 6C aryl; either a-f : 0-2; or a+b+c+d+e+f : 1-8, preferably 3-8; and R 1>, R 2> : H, F, Cl, CN, NCS, optionally chiral 1-12C- alkyl or -alkoxy, 2-8C alkenyl, 2-8C alkynyl, H or halo, preferably F, where the CH 2group is substituted by -O-, -CO-, -O-CO-, -COO- or -CH=CH- and heteroatom is not directly connected. When m is 0 or n is 0 in R 1>or R 2>, one CH 2-group may be replaced by: (i) trans-1,4-cyclohexylene, in which one or more non-adjacent CH 2groups nay be replaced by -O- and/or -S-, or (ii) 1,4-bicyclo(2,2,2)-octylene, piperidine-1,4-diyl, naphthalene-2,6-diyl, decahydronaphthalene-2,6-diyl and 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene-2,6-diyl, or (iii) 1,4-cyclohexenylene, in which groups (i)-(iii) are optionally substituted by CN or halo.
