To provide a method for producing a cyclic olefin addition polymer, capable of giving a relatively low molecular weight cyclic olefin addition polymer without using a large amount of a polymerization catalyst or the large amount of a molecular weight-regulating agent.
This method for producing the cyclic olefin addition polymer by performing the addition polymerization of the cyclic olefin compound by using the polymerization catalyst consisting of (A) an organometallic compound containing a metal atom of the 10th group of the periodic table and (B) an ionic boron compound or organoaluminum compound is characterized by using a specific unsaturated cyclic (thio)ether compound as the molecular weight-regulating agent, whose use amount is ≤0.1 mol per 1 mol of the cyclic olefin compound.
