To provide an industrially suitable method for producing a cycloalkanol and a cycloalkanone in the presence of a metal complex catalyst obtained by reacting a metal chloride with a small amount of an N-alkylimidazole in high decomposition activity and in high objective substance selectivity.

This method for producing the cycloalkanol and the cycloalkanone is characterized by subjecting a cycloalkyl hydroperoxide to a decomposition reaction in the presence of a metal complex catalyst obtained by reacting a metal halide represented by the general formula (1) [M is ruthenium atom or cobalt atom; X is a halogen atom; (n) is 2 or 3] with an N-alkylimidazole represented by the general formula (2) (R is a 1 to 6C alkyl).
