To provide a method suitable for mass-producing a discotic compound having high performance as a discotic liquid crystal compound in high yield at low cost and in hight productivity by esterification from a phenolic hydroxy- bearing central portion precursor and a carboxylic acid-bearing side chain portion precursor.
This method for producing the discotic compound by esterification from the phenolic hydroxy-bearing central portion precursor to be served as the central portion of the discotic compound and the carboxylic acid-bearing side chain portion precursor to be served as the side chain portion of the discotic compound, involves treating with an adsorbent a reaction liquid obtained by the esterification between the central portion precursor and a mixed acid anhydride derivative where the carboxylic acid portion of the side chain precursor is activated.
