Abstract:

To provide a method for producing a fiber-reinforced metal matrix composite article.

A metal component 70 of at least one first portion of at least one metal coated fibre 14 of at least one fibre preform 20 is bonded to a metal component 72 of at least one second portion of the at least one metal coated fibre 14 of the at least one fibre preform 20 to hold the at least one metal coated fibre 14 in a predetermined position. The at least one fibre preform 20 is placed between the first metal component 70 and the second metal component 72. The second metal component 72 is sealed to the first metal component 70, and heat and pressure is applied so as to consolidate the at least one fibre preform 20 and to diffusion bond a metal 18 provided on the fibre of the at least one fibre preform 20, the first metal component 70, and the second metal component 72 to form a unitary composite article. The bonding 74 is performed by ultrasonic welding.
