Abstract:

To provide a method for safely mass-producing at a low cost a fullerene derivative useful as a proton conductor such as a polyhydroxylated fullerene or polyhydroxylated fullerene hydrogensulfate.

The method for producing the fullerene derivative comprises reacting oleum with fullerene or a hydroxylated fullerene and contacting the resultant reaction mixture with an extractive solvent to separate the resultant cyclosulfated fullerene or polyhydroxylated fullerene hydrogensulfate respectively as precipitate from the reaction mixture, wherein the extractive solvent to be used is e.g. water, a 1-3C aliphatic carboxylic acid, its alkyl ester, benzene or an alkylbenzene.
