To provide a method for producing a fused ring compound consisting of a benzene ring, a 7-membered ring and a benzene ring such as a dibenzo[b, f]thiepin derivative by a small number of reaction processes in a high yield, at a low cost and by a low environmental load.

This method for producing the fused ring compound is provided by having a process of synthesizing the fused ring compound expressed by following general formula (II) from a compound expressed by following general formula (I) by a reaction expressed by following reaction formula (1) [wherein, R1 to R10 are each independently H, hydroxy, a halogen or a 1-20C alkyl; X is a halogen, M is an alkali metal; Y is a group 16 element; and (z) is an integer of 0 to 9].
