A slurry is prepared from an aromatic carboxylic acid and a solvent, the slurry is continuously supplied to a reactor to carry out hydrogenation reaction in the presence of a solid catalyst, the reaction liquid is continuously extracted from the reactor and at least a part of the extracted reaction liquid is returned to the reactor to perform the hydrogenation reaction while keeping the aromatic carboxylic acid in a state substantially completely dissolved in the reactor.
