To provide a method of producing an indene polymer capable of improving the yield and weight-average molecular weight, to obtain a molding material, a film or an additive using the indene-containing polymer excellent in low water absorptivity, heat resistance, mechanical strength and optical characteristics and to provide an optical part using the molding material, film or additive.
This method of producing an indene-containing polymer comprises polymerizing 100 pts.wt. of the sum total of the following monomer components (a) and (b) by using a Lewis acid and a specific dihalogen-containing compound as a polymerization initiator and adding at least one kind of cation reactive compound into the polymerizing reactional system. (a) 5-99.5 pts.wt. of indene or an indene-based monomer represented by the general formula (I) (R1, R2, R3, R4 and R5s denote each a substituent group containing any one or more kinds of hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, carbon atom, oxygen atom, nitrogen atom, sulfur atom, phosphorus atom, selenium atom, silicon atom and tin atom; and n denotes an integer of 1-4, with the proviso that R5s may each be same or different when n is a plural number) and (b) 0.5-95 pts.wt. of at least one kind of monomer cationically copolymerizable with the indene or indene-based monomer represented by the general formula (I).
