To obtain a phase difference plate which can control not only the phase difference in the front and oblique direction but its wavelength dispersion and to obtain a liquid crystal display device, having superior display quality in which coloring in a white-and-black display is prevented over a wide viewing angle range.
In this method of producing the laminated phase difference plate, each one or more sheets of non-stretched film and stretched film are laminated with adhesive layers, and the laminated body is heated to shrink in at least one direction in the plane to obtain a different phase difference of the laminate as a whole from that of the body before heating. The elliptically polarizing plate consists of a laminate of the laminated phase difference plate 1 and a polarizing plate 2, and the liquid crystal display device has the laminated phase difference plate or the laminated phase difference plate and a polarizing plate on at least one surface of a liquid crystal cell 3. In this method, the phase difference of the laminate as a whole is changed by the shrinking treatment. By using the combination of films satisfying 1.05≤α<1.3 and 1<α<1.05, where α is the ratio of the phase difference R1 by the light at 400 nm wavelength to the phase difference R2 by the light at 550 nm wavelength, the phase difference plate obtained can compensate the phase difference of a liquid crystal cell and its wavelength dispersion over a wide viewing angle range.
