To provide a method for producing a magnesium-based composite material by which the magnesium-based composite material having thermal properties suitable for the material of forming a heat dissipation member is obtained.
In the production method, upon production of a magnesium-based composite material in which pure magnesium or a magnesium alloy is used as a matrix metal and SiC particles are used as a dispersant, the dispersant raw material and the molten metal of the magnesium alloy or the like are contacted in an inert atmosphere and are compounded. As the dispersant raw material, a powdery mixture obtained by mixing two or more powders of SiC particles having different average particle diameters is used. By performing the compounding in the inert atmosphere, the reaction between the magnesium alloy or the like with the atmospheric gas is prevented. By utilizing the two or more powders having different average particle diameters, the composite material in which the ratio of the SiC particles is high can be produced.
