To provide a method for producing a metal matrix composite by which the boundary strength between a reinforcing material and a base material can be improved by preventing the oxidation of the surface in the preform of the reinforcing material, and also production cost can be reduced by facilitating the oxidation prevention technique for the surface of the preform.
The whole face of a preform A obtained by molding a reinforcing material, so as to be a prescribed shape is coated with an Al sheet S. Next, the preform A coated with the Al sheet S is preheated using a heater 20. In this case, the feed of oxygen to the whole face of the preform A from the outside is prevented by the Al sheet S, and further, oxygen remaining between the Al sheet S and the preform A is preferentially used for the oxidation of the Al sheet S. In this way, the oxidation in the whole face of the preform A can be prevented, thus the wettability of the surface of metal fiber F with the base material upon casting can be improved.
