To provide a method for producing a monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbon capable of producing a monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbon having 6-8 carbon atoms with high yield from a starting material oil containing a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon.
The method for producing the monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbon has a breakdown/modification reaction step of obtaining a product by introducing the starting material oil into a breakdown/modification reaction vessel and bringing the starting material oil into reactive contact with a catalyst, a purification/collection step of purifying and collecting the monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbon isolated from the product generated in the breakdown/modification reaction step, a hydrogenation reaction step of hydrogenating the heavy fraction isolated from the product generated in the breakdown/modification reaction step, and a recycling step of returning the hydrogenated product of the heavy fraction obtained in the hydrogenation reaction step to the breakdown/modification reaction step. In the recycling step, the hydrogenated product of the heavy fraction is introduced to the breakdown/modification reaction vessel at a different position from the position of introduction of the starting material oil in a manner so that the time for the product of the heavy fraction to come in contact with the catalyst in the breakdown/modification reaction vessel is shorter than the time for the starting material oil to come in contact with the catalyst in the breakdown/modification reaction vessel.
