To provide a method for producing newsprint paper that contains DIP in high content and is suitably used for offset printing and gives excellent printing quality having no difference in face smoothness between front face and back face.

In this method for producing the newsprint paper, a paper stock containing used paper pulp as the main component is made to paper, dried, then the base paper is coated with a surface-treating agent, dried again and passed through a soft calender. In this case, the drying before coating the surface treating agent is carried out by means of a drying installation comprising a single-deck drier, and simultaneously, in a paper-passing through treatment through the soft calender, the paper face not being brought into contact with a metal roll of the single-deck drier is subjected to a one-nipping treatment so that the non-contacting paper face comes into contact with the metal roll face of the soft calender.
