To provide a method for efficiently producing a norbornene-based copolymer excellent in transparency, heat resistance, low water absorbability, and electrical insulation characteristics.
The method for producing a norbornene-based copolymer includes precipitation polymerization using as a solvent a liquid which dissolves a norbornene-based monomer but not a polymer of the monomer. The norbornene-based copolymer includes monomer units represented by norbornene-based derivatives not having a specific functional group, represented by general formula (2) and different from general formula (2), wherein R12 represents a 1-10C alkyl group; and R13, R14, and R15 each independently represents a hydrogen atom or a 1-10C alkyl group. The solvent for precipitation polymerization includes an aliphatic carboxylic acid ester.
