To provide a method for producing an optically active α-amino acids important as a production intermediate for various industrial chemicals, agrochemicals, and pharmaceuticals in high quality and at low cost.
In the method, a resolution agent which stereoselectively forms a salt having low solubility with either one of optical isomer of a D-form or L-form is reacted to a mixture of an L-α-amino acid with a D-α-amino acid, either one of the D-form or L-form α-amino acid is separated as a solid of a diastereomeric salt, living cells of a microorganism having amino acid racemization activity or a treated product of the same is acted to the resultant α-amino acid mixture rich in the residual L-form or D-form to reduce optical purity and the resultant product is repeatedly subjected to the stereoselective resolution by diastereomeric salt formation.
