Abstract:

To obtain a method of producing a phase difference plate by which a heat- shrinkable film after the shrinking treatment can be separated easily with an adhesive layer from a formed phase difference plate, without leaving the adhesive.

In this method of producing a phase difference plate, a heat shrinkable film, having higher surface tension than that of a thermoplastic film to be adhered, is adhered with an adhesive layer to one or both surfaces of the thermoplastic film, the films are heated to stretch or shrink the thermoplastic film in at least one of the longitudinal direction and the transverse direction by the effect of the shrinking force of the heat-shrinkable film, and then the heat-shrinkable film is peeled. The optical member consists of a laminated body of the phase difference plate thus produced and a polarizing plate. The liquid crystal display device is equipped with that phase difference plate or with the phase difference plate and a polarizing plate on at least one surface of a liquid crystal cell. Thus, the phase difference plate having a highly controlled phase difference can be obtained efficiently and the phase difference due to the double refraction of a liquid crystal cell can be compensated to a high level. The liquid crystal display device superior in viewing angle and contrast can be obtained.
