Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently producing a phenol resin and an epoxy resin by using phenols and unsaturated cyclic hydrocarbon compounds having two or more carbon-carbon double bonds as raw materials.
SOLUTION: This method for producing the phenol resin comprises a step (I) for reacting phenols with unsaturated cyclic hydrocarbons by using a continuous reactor in the presence of an acid catalyst, a step (II) for stopping the reaction and a step (III) for removing and recovering the unreacted raw material from the reaction solution. In the method, the acid catalyst is deactivated with inorganic alkalis in the step (II) and total amount of the acid catalyst and the inorganic alkalis is controlled to 0.2-3 wt.% based on the raw materials and the reaction solution is fed to the step (III) without removing the acid catalyst and the inorganic alkalis. The phenol resin having excellent properties can efficiently be produced thereby.
