To provide a method for producing a polyamide with enhanced production efficiency by adding a diamine to a dicarboxylic acid in the molten state in the absence of a solvent to carry out direct polycondensation.

The method for producing a polyamide conducts the polycondensation of a xylylene diamine with a dicarboxylic acid and comprises, (1) after melting the dicarboxylic acid, (2) a step of adding the amine to the dicarboxylic acid in the molten state in a batchwise first polymerization vessel to obtain a middle stage polymerized product by polycondensation reaction, (3) a step of continuously feeding the middle stage polymerized product to a second polymerization vessel while controlling the change in the relative viscosity of the middle stage polymerized product within ±0.2, and (4) a step of further conducting polycondensation reaction in the continuous second polymerization vessel to obtain a late stage polymerized product.
