The method for producing a polycyclic tertiary amine (E) expressed by 1-azabicyclo[2,2,2]octane, 2-methyl-1-azabicyclo[2,2,2]octane, etc., comprises the cyclization of a cyclic amine salt (B) such as 4-(2-bromoethyl)piperidine, 4-(2-chloroethyl)piperidine, 4-(2-iodoethyl)piperidine, 4-(2-methyl-2-bromoethyl)piperidine, 4-(2-methyl-2-chloroethyl)piperidine and 4-(2-methyl-2-iodoethyl)piperidine in a solvent (S) in the presence of a basic compound (C) and neutralizing the product with the basic compound (C), wherein the solvent (S) contains an ester (A), preferably a carboxylic acid alkyl ester, and water.
