To provide a method for producing a (poly)glyceryl ether having low contents of chlorine at a low cost by a simple method.
This method for producing the (poly)glyceryl ether, characterized by reacting an alcohol compound or phenol compound with 1-chloro-2,3- propanediol in the presence of an alkali substance. The alcohol compound or phenol compound include aliphatic monohydric or polyhydric alcohols, monohydric or polyhydric phenols, and their alkylene oxide adducts. The obtained (poly)glyceryl ether is represented by the general formula (2) [M is a residue obtained by removing a hydroxyl group from a monool or a polyol; AO is an oxyalkylene group; (n) is the number of 0, 1 or larger; (s) is the number of 1 or larger; (m) is the valency of M].
