To provide a method for producing a pyridnecarbaldehyde in good yields within a short time, which comprises catalytically reducing a cyanopyridine with hydrogen and in which the formation of by-products such as an aminomethylpyridne is inhibited, an inexpensive catalyst such as palladium is not used, and the reaction is industrially easily controlled.
The method comprises catalytically reducing a cyanopyridine in the presence of a Raney-nickel catalyst in an acidic aqueous solution, wherein the reaction is carried out in the presence of hypophosphorous acid or a salt thereof. According to this method, it is possible to produce the pydirinecarbaldehyde in good yields within a short time without forming by-products such as an aminopyridine and without using an expensive catalyst such as palladium with industrial ease of reaction control.
