To provide a method of producing reduced iron, capable of continuously operating a rotary kiln for a long period of time by preventing generation of deposits on an inner wall of the rotary kiln.
A method of producing reduced iron includes charging steel dust comprising Fe, Zn together with a reducing agent into a rotary kiln 6 to apply reductive calcination thereto to separate Zn and to recover Fe as reduced iron, wherein a CaO source is added into the steel dust 1 to make CaO/SiO2 of the charged raw material not lower than 1.5 by mass ratio and the particle size and the ratio of the CaO source to be added thereinto is controlled to become -0.2 mm and 80% or higher, respectively. It is preferable to carry out adding of the CaO source to the steel dust by charging it in a slurry state (as lime milk) into an adjustment tank 11 used in pretreating the steel dust, thereby the fluctuation of CaO/SiO2 can be made small.
