PURPOSE: To obtain a dense silicon brick without using a salt which imposes a burden on the environment by specifying the grain sizes and contents of the latter two of silica rock, silicon and pyrogenic silicon dioxide which are the components in a starting mix.
CONSTITUTION: The silica brick with increased bulk density is produced from the starting mix having the graded granular quartzite (silica) and the elemental silicon. the starting mix contg. 0.5 to 10 wt.% silicon having a grain size up to 75 μ and 1.5 to 8 wt.% particulate amorphous pyrogenic silicon dioxide with respect to the quartzite, silicon and pyrogenic silicon dioxide which are the components in the starting mix is used for the production of the silica brick. The bulk density of the brick formed by sufficient conversion of the quartz phase of the starting material to crystobalite and tridimite and firing at the time of firing the silicon dioxide brick by the process is high. When the silicon and pyrogenic silicic acid contents of the starting mix exceed the upper limit, the compression molding and firing of the brick are difficult. It the contents are below the lower limit, the remarkable improvement in the bulk density of the brick is not obtainable.
