Abstract:
To obtain spherical silica aerogel which can exhibit various physical properties by combining silica and nanofiber.SOLUTION: Spherical silica aerogel is produced by following steps, (1) a step to prepare aqueous silica sol with nanofiber dispersed therein, (2) a step to form W/O type emulsion by dispersing the aqueous silica sol in a hydrophobic solvent, (3) a step to convert the W/O type emulsion into a dispersion of a gelation product by gelating the silica sol by heating, and (4) a step to separate and recover the gelation product. Compression strength of the silica aerogel particles can be significantly increased by adopting for example cellulose nanofiber as the nanofiber.SELECTED DRAWING: None
