To provide a new method for producing an acid spiro compound useful as an electrolyte of an electrolytic solution for an electrochemical capacitor or a cell and a halogenated acid spiro compound usable as a raw material for the acid spiro compound in high purity and efficiency.
A halogenated spiro compound expressed by (CH2)n>N+<(CH2)mX- (X is a halogen atom; and n and m are each 2-6) is produced by reacting a dihalogenated alkane expressed by X(CH2)nX (X is a halogen atom; and n is 2-6) with an alicyclic amine expressed by (CH2)mNH (m is 2-6) in an organic solvent, reacting the reaction product with an amine expressed by R1R2NH (R1 and R2 are each hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl) and separating the by-product expressed by R1R2NH2X from the obtained reaction mixture. An acid spiro compound expressed by (CH2)nN+(CH2)mA- (A is an acid radical; and n and m are each 2-6) is produced by reacting the halogenated spiro compound with an acid or an acid salt.
