To provide a method for producing a vicinal alkanediol or alkanetriol.
This method for producing the vicinal alkanediol or alkanetriol includes (a1) reacting a 4-20C monoolefin with hydrogen peroxide and formic acid in the presence of water, or (a2) reacting a 4-20C monoolefin alcohol with the formic acid in a first stage and then reacting a reaction product formed in the first stage with the hydrogen peroxide in the presence of the water in a second stage, (b) distilling and removing the water and the formic acid from a mixture obtained in the process (a1) or the process (a2), (c) reacting a mixture obtained in the process (b) with at least one 1-4C aliphatic alcohol in the presence of at least one arylsulfonic acid of formula: RnAr-SO3H or at least one 6-16C alkylsulfonic acid, and (d) distilling and removing a formic acid ester formed in the process (c) together with, in case of need, the alcohol still existing from a reaction mixture of the process (c), wherein the process (c) and the process (d) are conducted continuously or simultaneously.
