PURPOSE: To obtain a polymer little in the generation of aggregates, excellent in polymerization stability and reproducibility, and little in the changes of physical properties by seed-polymerizing a nonionic monomer in the aqueous dispersion of a self-emulsifying vinyl ester polymer, etc.
CONSTITUTION: A self-emulsifying vinyl ester polymer or an aqueous dispersion obtained from the self-emulsifying vinyl ester polymer is used for a seed emulsion, and nonionic monomers consisting mainly of a vinyl ester are seed- polymerized in the seed emulsion. The seed polymerization is a continuous polymerization. The obtained polymer is further saponified. The self-emulsifying vinyl ester contains preferably ionic groups such as carboxyl groups, sulfonic acid groups or phosphoric acid groups in an amount of 0.01-20mol.%. Methanol, etc., is used for the aqueous dispersion.
