To provide a continuous method for producing a water-absorbing composite material having a high water-absorbing rate, a large amount of water-absorption and soft touch feeling and useful for paper diaper, etc.
This water-absorbing composite material is produced by applying an aqueous monomer solution containing mainly acrylic acid and/or its salt, as a mist state on a napped fibrous substrate by heating, to obtain the fibrous substrate carrying the aqueous monomer solution in fine particle state, and then polymerizing the monomer on the fibrous substrate. As the monomer, a monomer mixture of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer consisting mainly of acrylic acid and/or its salt and a monomer having ≥2 radical-polymerizable groups is preferable. In the napping process, it is preferable to increase a specific volume of the fibrous substrate by ≥1.3 fold of that of the fibrous substrate before the process.
