To provide a method for producing a water-based polyester resin which, while reducing an environmental load, has excellent water resistance, has excellent water dispersibility, and also has excellent stability of a resin dispersion, which, while having a terephthalic acid residue derived from recycled polyester, has resin characteristics such as adhesiveness and transparency of the same level as those obtained when terephthalic acid not derived from recycled polyester and the like are used, and a resin dispersion of which has excellent long-period water dispersibility and can improve stability such as temporal stability of solution haze.SOLUTION: A method for producing a water-based polyester resin comprises a first step, a second step, and a third step. In the first step, an ester formation reaction and a depolymerization reaction are carried out using recycled polyester, a first polycarboxylic acid component including a dibasic polycarboxylic acid residue, and a polyhydric alcohol component. In the second step, an ester formation reaction is carried out using a reaction product of step 1 and a second polycarboxylic acid component including a tribasic or more polybasic carboxylic acid residue. In the third step, a polycondensation reaction is carried out by evacuation.SELECTED DRAWING: None
