Abstract:
To provide a method for producing alcohol that recovers glycerin in high yield with excellent economical efficiency, from oils and fats comprising glycerin as a principal component.
The invention relates to the method for producing the alcohol from fats and oils which comprise glycerides as principal component, comprising following steps 1 and 2. Step 1: A step wherein a raw material fat and oil is reacted with water for producing a reaction product containing a glycerin backbone. Step 2: A step wherein the reaction product obtained in the step 1 is hydrogenated in the presence of a catalyst while making not less than 0.5 mole of water coexist per 1 mole of glycerin backbone contained in the reaction product.
