To provide an industrially advantageous method for producing α-aryl-N-alkylnitrone.
This method comprises (A) a process for reacting benzyl halides shown by formula (1) (wherein Ar is a substitutable phenyl; and X is a halogen) with primary amines shown by formula (2) (R1, R2 and R3 may be the same or different and are each a lower alkyl, and optional two or all of them may be combined with each other to form a ring together with their bonded carbon atoms) to obtain N-benzyl-secondary amines of formula (3) (Ar, R1, R2 and R3 are each the same as above), and (B) a process for reacting the N-benzyl-secondary amines with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a metal oxide to obtain α-aryl-N-alkylnitrone represented by formula (4) (Ar, R1, R2 and R3 are each the same as above).
