PURPOSE: To easily obtain a dl-tocopherol compound in a good yield in a short process from an inexpensively available raw material by subjecting the specific compound to a reducing reaction.

CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula I [one of the bonds in the group of formula II is a single bond, and the other is a double bond; R1R3 are H, (substituted)hydrocarbon group; X is (protected)hydroxyl group; Y is-CH2-CH2-,- CH=CH-] is subjected e.g. to a catalytic hydrogen addition reaction in the presence of a contact catalyst such as Pd/C in a solvent such as an alcohol compound preferably at approximately 10-60C under a hydrogen pressure of approximately 1-3atm for about 1-2hr to obtain a dl-tocopherol compound of formula III. The compound includes 6-acetoxy-2,5,7,8-tetramethyl-2-(4',8', 12'- trimethyltridecyl) chromane of formula IV.
