Abstract:
To provide a sponge titanium production method capable of producing a sponge titanium lump having a large lump volume even at an upper end side and having a shape similar to a column shape.SOLUTION: A sponge titanium production method includes a reduction process of holding molten magnesium in a metal-made reduction reaction vessel and feeding titanium tetrachloride in the vessel to generate a sponge titanium lump. In the reduction process, a ratio (H2/H1) of the height H2 from the bottom edge of the sponge titanium lump to the top edge thereof to the height H1 from the bottom edge of the lump to the bath surface of molten magnesium in a vertical direction satisfies a relation of the expression (1): H2/H1≤0.85.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
